Older Wake Forest homes need careful cleaning

Wake Forest began as a college town, and the streets around downtown still show it. Many houses near White Street and in the old mill village were built generations ago. They've usually got wood floors and a lot of painted trim. These houses were built well. Their finishes are old, though, and the wrong cleaner or too much water can wear them down in a hurry.

Old wood floors are where we slow down most. Water that sits in the seams between boards can raise the grain, and a harsh cleaner leaves a dull haze. That damage builds slowly. By the time it shows, cleaning won't undo it. Painted trim needs care too. Dust packs into every groove of old molding, and a quick swipe with a cloth only pulls out the top layer.

So on an older house we damp mop the wood floors instead of soaking them, and we dry them as we go. Baseboards and window sills get wiped by hand so the dust comes out of the grooves. If we find something that looks fragile, like loose trim or a cracked pane, we'll show it to you before we clean near it. The kitchen gets the same care, down to the stove and the inside of the microwave.

Pine pollen and red clay come indoors

Wake Forest has a lot of tree cover, and much of it is pine. In spring those trees drop yellow pollen that coats cars and porches for weeks. It rides indoors on shoes and pets, and through every window left open on a nice day. Then it settles on sills and ceiling fan blades. Pollen turns sticky in humid air, so a dry duster mostly pushes it around.

The ground here is red clay. After a rain it comes in on boots and paws. On light carpet it leaves a rusty orange stain that regular vacuuming won't lift. The longer it sits, the deeper it works into the fibers. Entry rugs and the carpet by the back door usually take the worst of it. We do carpet cleaning too, so a clay stain doesn't have to wait for another company.

Summers here are long and humid, and that moisture shows up indoors. Grout and shower caulk grow mildew, and window glass picks up a film that pollen sticks to. So in pollen season we wipe surfaces with a damp cloth instead of dusting them dry. We rinse the cloth often so the pollen doesn't travel from room to room. In summer the bathrooms get extra time on the grout. We clean windows too, and in spring that mostly means getting the pollen film off the glass.

New Wake Forest houses start out dusty

Most Wake Forest houses are far newer than the ones downtown. The town has grown fast, and big subdivisions like Heritage now sit well outside the old center. These houses are larger, with open kitchens and carpeted bonus rooms over the garage. Tall windows and high ceiling fans collect the same pollen the old houses do, just higher up. Bigger houses take longer to clean well, and guest rooms upstairs are easy to forget.

New houses are still going up on the edges of town. A brand new house isn't a clean house. Drywall dust is fine enough to float, and it keeps settling for weeks after the painters leave. It lands inside cabinets and in window tracks, and it drifts down out of the vents. If furniture and rugs go in before that dust comes out, it ends up in the fabric. Post-construction cleaning takes it out while the rooms are still empty.
