Wendell grew up as a tobacco and railroad town on the east side of Wake County, and you can still see it in the houses. Spring pollen turns Wendell porches yellow

There are pine trees all around Wendell, and every spring they coat the town in yellow pollen. It settles on porches and window screens. Then it comes inside on shoes and dog paws and ends up in the carpet and along the baseboards. By the end of the season, most flat surfaces in the house carry a thin yellow film.
