Older Raleigh homes take longer to clean

Raleigh has a lot of older houses, especially inside the Beltline. Oakwood is full of Victorian homes, and Boylan Heights and Hayes Barton are not far behind in age. Brick ranch houses from later years line many other streets in the same part of town. The oldest of these homes have tall ceilings, deep window sills, wide wood trim and original wood floors. Each of those holds dust in spots that a newer house simply does not have.

Dust on top of a tall door frame or a picture rail can sit there for months if nobody looks up. Old wood floors have small gaps between the boards, and grit settles into them. Windows with many small panes take time, because every pane shows a streak. When a house like this only gets a quick surface clean, it looks fine for a day. Then dust drifts back down from the places nobody reached.

So in an older Raleigh house we clean each room from the top down. That way dust never lands on a spot we already finished. We wipe the trim and door frames by hand. Raleigh pollen and clay end up inside

Every spring a coat of yellow pine pollen settles over Raleigh. It covers cars and porches across the city, and it rides into the house on shoes and through open windows. Inside, it collects on window sills and on the blades of ceiling fans. If it stays there, the fan throws it back into the air the next time it runs. Anyone in the house with allergies feels it.

The ground under Raleigh is red clay, and it does not stay in the yard. When it is dry it turns into fine red dust on porches and steps, and after rain it comes in as mud on shoes and paws. Light carpet takes it worst. Clay leaves an orange stain that a regular vacuum will not lift. After a few months, an entry rug looks a shade darker than the rest of the room.

Summers here are hot and humid, and damp air lets mildew start in showers and along window frames where water sits. That changes what a clean needs from one season to the next. A spring clean in Raleigh needs extra time on sills and fan blades. A summer clean needs more time on shower grout and around the tub. When clay has worked deep into the carpet, a vacuum is not enough, and carpet cleaning is the next step.

Raleigh rentals need a clean between tenants

A lot of people move in and out of Raleigh. Students rent houses and apartments around NC State, and many of those leases end in the summer. Downtown has filled up with new apartment and condo buildings, and people come and go from them all year.
