Fuquay-Varina mixes old houses with new builds

Fuquay-Varina started as two towns, Fuquay Springs and Varina, that later joined into one. Each side kept its own small downtown. The streets around them still hold older wood-framed houses with hardwood floors and a lot of painted trim. Past those streets, farmland has turned into subdivision after subdivision of newer homes. Red clay and pine pollen come inside

A lot of yards around Fuquay-Varina sit on red clay. After a rain it turns to a sticky orange mud that rides in on shoes and dog paws. Once it dries, it breaks into a fine powder that works down into carpet and into the grout on a tile entry. Clay also stains. Leave it in a light carpet long enough and the orange tint sets into the fibers, and vacuuming stops making any difference.

Spring adds a yellow layer on top. The pine trees around town shed pollen heavily for a few weeks, usually around April, and it coats cars and porch furniture. It also blows in through open windows and settles on sills and ceiling fan blades. A dry duster mostly lifts pollen into the air, where it settles again soon after. It needs a damp cloth, and the window glass needs a real wash after the season ends.

Summer here is long and humid, and that moisture has to go somewhere. In a bathroom with a weak exhaust fan, it settles into the grout and caulk. Gray or black spots of mildew show up along the bottom of the shower. A bathroom cleaned every couple of weeks stays ahead of it. One that waits all summer usually needs a deep clean before the grout looks right again.
